The privacy statement covers the information services relating to the website provided by Leeds Metropolitan University (Leeds Met) as (the website).

The purpose of this statement is to inform users of the website about what information is collected about them when they visit the site, how this information is used, any disclosure to third parties and the ways in which users’ privacy is protected.


Confidentiality and security

Leeds Met takes your privacy seriously. Any information you provide will be held securely and in accordance with the Date Protection Act 1998. Your personal details will not, under any circumstances, be disclosed to any third party.

Information we collect from visitors for our own use

We collect personal information from visitors in three areas of the website as follows:

  1. Ask a Student – The ask a student form allows school students to send questions about higher education to be answered by University students. Responses will be coordinated via the Get Ahead team and names, telephone, email addresses will be kept entirely confidential, the University student answering the question will not see this personally identifiable information.
  2. Student Blogs – The student blog section of the website allows visitors to post comments on articles. In order to comment, visitors must enter their name, email address and optional website address. The user’s name and website address will be displayed publicly on the website alongside their comment, the user’s email address will be kept private and only used to send notifications relating directly to their comment (eg. follow up comments). The user will be able to unsubscribe from such notifications at any time.
  3. Higher Education Quiz -The higher education quiz allows students to enter the following information, in order to be entered into our prize draw competition: name, school, year of study. This information will be stored until 31st March 2011, at which point it will be deleted. The information will only be used to select and contact winners of the competition.By submitting your personal data, you are agreeing to its transfer, storing and processing by Leeds Met. Leeds Met will take such reasonable steps as necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely and in accordance with this privacy policy.

You should be aware that the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we will do out best to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted to our site; any transmission is at your own risk.


Site usage information and cookies

Cookies are pieces o f data created when you visit a site and are stored in the cookie directory of your hard drive. They generally do not expire at the end of your session. Cookies do not contain any personal information about you and cannot be used to identify an individual user. They are used to help you when you return to a website. For example, they may enable you to return directly to a particular part of the site by ‘remembering’ where you last accessed.
